Keeping You Safe Against Scams and Other Fraudulent Activity

Keeping You Safe Against Scams and Other Fraudulent Activity
December 15, 2021

At Thinking Capital, information security is paramount to our operations and all stakeholders. As such, our collective teams are devoted to keeping you aware of existing scams and frauds, and assisting you to detect and protect yourself from such. Here are some easy tips you can follow to keep yourself vigilant, and protect you and your business from scammers:

  •  Beware of spoofing (fraudulent emails, websites, calls and texts disguised as reputable companies in order to attain sensitive information.)
  •  Be sure you know who you are dealing with. Spoofs will use real company names. Make sure you inspect each invoice thoroughly before making a payment. Also, check to see that the website name or sender’s address is correct. Scammers will often create fake domains that look very similar to the real ones. You can check malicious domains here: https://urlscan.io/
  • Similarly beware of phishing (a method of deceiving users online, typically via email, into giving out important data.)
  •  Phishing scams will often ask you to fill out forms or install data-gathering malware.
  • If you receive a suspicious phone call, do not share any personal information, banking information, passwords, or take any further action. Immediately hang up and report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at https://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm

Remember scammers can target any Canadian business. To identify scams pertaining to your Thinking Capital account, we ask you to keep the following in mind:

  • We do not proactively ask for payment by prepaid card, credit card or electronic transfer and we do not accept bitcoin.
  • We do not ask customers to click on a link to accept an electronic transfer (credit/refund).
  • Confirm the sender’s identity before replying to email requests and before opening attachments or clicking on links, even if they appear to come from a legitimate source. Thinking Capital emails typically end in @thinkingcapital.ca, but you should be aware that scammers sometimes resort to “spoofing” to make an email appear to end in @thinkingcapital.ca, even if it was not sent by us. Try hitting “reply” on the email to see if the address is different, in which case the email was likely not sent by us. Contact our customer service team when in doubt at 1-866-889-9412.
  • Do not trust unusual, high-pressure, or urgent phone calls, emails or text messages, especially if they ask for any payments, personal information or your login details.

Our objective when collecting and using personal information is to maintain and improve the relationship we have with you; provide you with information about products and services that you will value; reduce the cost associated with maintaining your (and others’) accounts so that we may continue to provide you with a fairly priced product; reduce unwanted or inappropriate marketing; and protect you from unauthorized access to and use of your account or personal information.

We are dedicated to ensuring that your data remains very secure. Following these tips will help you to identify genuine versus fraudulent activity.
